In a wooden house in Pekalongan, Joko holds his breath each time hot wax touches cloth. One tremor can ruin a pattern two weeks in the making.
The commission from Singapore came in 2016: a motif marrying orchid and peacock. "I needed three months just for the sketch," he says.
